Facts
Henry David Thoreau
Founded in 1941, the Thoreau Society, Concord, MA,
is the oldest and largest organization devoted to an American
author
and is dedicated to promoting Henry David Thoreau's life, works,
and legacy.
The Thoreau Institute at Walden Woods, owned and operated
by the Walden Woods Project, provides the
most comprehensive body of Thoreau-related material available in
one place. Opening in 1998, the Thoreau Institute's
Library holds 8000 volumes, and upwards of 60,000 items that
include manuscripts, correspondence, periodicals, pamphlets,
music, graphic arts, maps, and personal histories.
In 2001, the Thoreau Society was designated the
official
Friends of Walden
Pond group, supporting the visitor services,
conservation projects and park operations at Walden Pond State
Reservation,
site of Henry David Thoreau's experiment in living deliberately
(1845-1847)
and inspiration for his classic work, Walden (1854). The Friends of Walden
Pond
is a key outreach activity of the Thoreau Society.
The Concord Museum
is a great place to start any visit
to the historic town of Concord, Massachusetts.
The Museum, founded in 1886, serves as a center of learning
and cultural enjoyment for the thousands of visitors touring
Concord each year, as well as for area residents of all ages.
The Concord Museum's Henry David Thoreau Collection, the world's largest
collection of objects related to Concord's native son, numbers over 250
artifacts such as furniture, ceramics, glass, metalwork, books, photographs,
manuscripts and textiles. The Museum is honored to be the steward
of this national treasure. The Concord Museum's unparalleled collection
includes the desk, bedstead, and chair from Thoreau's house at Walden Pond.
